    The Masters Golf Championship

    The Masters is one of the four major championships in professional golf. It is usually scheduled for the first full week of April. It's known as the Grandaddy of them All. The site of the tournament is always at Augusta National Golf Club, a private course in the city of Augusta.

     

    The Masters was started by amateur champion Bobby Jones. The first time The Masters was played was in 1934. The number of players is usually smaller than most tournaments because it fielded by invitation only.

     

    The Masters marks the beginning of spring for sports fans. The venue is stunning with acres of blooming flowers that makes Augusta something different than any course. It's breathtaking, and the golf is compelling.

     

    Many of Golf's great champions have been past Masters winners, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson.

    Augusta Canal Discovery Center

    This unique museum, the Augusta Canal Discovery Center, that tells the history of Augusta's 1845 canal and industrial revolution in the American South. It is housed in an old Cotton Mill that was built in the 19th century. Daily guided canal boat tours depart daily from the nearby dock. Early morning tours and sunset tours are the most popular.

     

    Be sure to check out the 10 minute film "The Power of a Canal" which documents the history of Augusta's Canal. Then check out the exhibits which include "The Hydropower Demonstration Turbine", "Henry Cumming, Canal Visionary", "How the Canal Works", "Mill & Boom Times", "Workers’ Life", and "New Waters, New Life - The Canal in the 20th Century".

     

    The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:30AM to 4:30PM.

    The Riverwalk

    The beautiful Augusta Riverwalk convers the area between 6th & 10th Streets in Downtown Augusta Georgia along the Savannah River.

     

    It is built on two levels of bricked walkway. The upper level can be reached by stairs and ramps along 10th Street. The lower level is accessed mainly from the Riverwalk Marina.

     

    The 8th Street Plaza and Bulkhead is a brick lined pedestrian only road. It takes you to a location overlooking the River at the 8th Street Bulkhead. The view is magnificent. Here you will experience seasonal events like the Saturday Market on the River, and the Candlelight Jazz Series held every Sunday during the months of May, June, July, and August.

     

    The 9th Street and 10th Street Plazas are spotlighted by two largest water features in downtown Augusta. 10th Street Plaza features a levee that opens into the Heroes Overlook, a memorial honoring those from our community who have been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, or Navy Cross.

     

    The Japanese Gardens is on the lower level of the Riverwalk, and features a tranquil waterfall that transports you to a whole new place! The Gardens have hosted many intimate weddings and vow renewal ceremonies.

    Phinizy Swamp Nature Park

    Based out of the beautiful Phinizy Swamp Nature Park near downtown Augusta, Phinizy Center was founded in 1996 in response to a critical need water quality research, K-12 environmental education, and most of all, environmental stewardship.

     

    At Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, in Augusta, Georgia, visitors are able to visit nature 365 days a year. Admission is free. The facilities offer guided hikes, bike rides, and other events that highlight the importance of wetlands and nature's water systems.

     

    Throughout the year, there are family-friendly events that bring folks closer to one another and the great outdoors. These events include Swamp Saturday Hikes, Children’s Hikes with Story Time, Full Moon Hikes, and Phinizy Family Camping.

     

    Each year, the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park host ther major fundraiser, Swamp Soiree, in October. It is a tented event that feature's a delicious dinner along with cocktails that raises money to support their mission of providing leadership for sustainable watersheds and economic vitality through research, education, and connecting people with nature.

    Imperial Theatre

    Augusta, Georgia is home to The Imperial Theatre. It is listed in the National Register as a critical component of Augusta's Broad Street Historic District. It was built in 1918, and is constructed in the Edwardian style. It is the only medium size traditional theatre in the Augusta area capable of flying scenery .

    Hence, it is a critical component of the infrastructure for area performing arts groups. It is the only performing arts theatre within a 150-mile radius that connects artists and audience members to historic social entertainment by providing a unique and historic setting.

     

    The Imperial Theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer Organ is a landmark to Augusta. The Rudolf Wurlitzer Company installed the organ in the Imperial Theatre in 1925. This theatre organ was designed as a “one man orchestra” to accompany silent movies.

     

    The Imperial Theatre celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2018. The “Western Union Room” is used as a meeting venue, and serves a gathering place for rehearsals, and as an overflow dressing room.
